The rule, as Maryland writes it

Maryland’s exemption used to be one of the narrowest in the country: Tax-General §11-214.1 exempted precious metal bullion or coins only where the sale price exceeded $1,000 AND the sale took place at the Baltimore Convention Center — effectively a coin-show exemption. Chapter 730 of 2026 (Senate Bill 309) repealed both conditions, so the exemption is now general. The codified text published online still shows the old wording, so summaries drawn from it are out of date; confirm the effective date with the Comptroller before relying on it for a recent purchase.

The state rate is 6%. Local rates are charged on top of it and are not included here.

What this page cannot tell you

Whether tax is actually charged depends on the dealer, not only on where you live: a retailer collects sales tax in states where they have nexus.

Local city and county rates stack on top of any state rate shown here, and several exemptions cover investment bullion but not jewellery or collectibles sold well above melt.
