The rule, as Massachusetts writes it
Massachusetts exempts sales of $1,000 or more of rare coins of numismatic value, gold or silver bullion or coins, and gold or silver tender traded at its metal value. The threshold is inclusive — a $1,000 order qualifies. Precious metals fabricated for industrial, professional or artistic use do not.
The state rate is 6.25%. Local rates are charged on top of it and are not included here.

What this page cannot tell you
Whether tax is actually charged depends on the dealer, not only on where you live: a retailer collects sales tax in states where they have nexus.
Local city and county rates stack on top of any state rate shown here, and several exemptions cover investment bullion but not jewellery or collectibles sold well above melt.
